I searched and searched for this answer and couldn't find it, so please forgive me if it's covered elsewhere. My question is a simple one. Is there much of a difference between 720p and 1080p when viewing it on say a 50" plasma or LCD? I've tried to even compare differences between the two on a 72" DLP and couldn't notice much of a difference.
The only reason I ask is because I don't see a reason to download movies in 1080p if I'm not missing out on too much resolution. I understand the resolution calculations, but it seems like a moot point if I don't miss too much. Thank you in advance for educating me on this topic if you're so inclined. |

Not exactly what I was looking for in terms of a response, but I appreciate them regardless. If anyone can offer a more technical point of view, I would greatly appreciate it.

No 720P is not as good! 1080p is a higher better resolution!

Well, I can tell a difference on a 56" HDTV between 720p and 1080p. If you can't tell the difference then either your TV is not capable of displaying 1920x1080 progressive video (it may be something lower, as a lot of sets don't have full 1920x1080 capability) or your eyes are just not as picky as other people. Either way, if you don't notice a difference then there's no need for 1080p for you personally.

It depends on your HDTV screen size and your relative distance with it. Based on my experience, 40" and below show the same quality.

One thing is the display size and other is the display resolution. And even one other thing: the distance you are to the display. Everything affects the image quality. If you stay close to the screen, you'll notice more clearly the resolution difference between 720p and 1080p, but if you sit far from the screen, the difference (specially on small screens) will become irrelevant.
You have to see how many "dots-per-inch (dpi)" the display have, to see if the image is clear. Imagine a very small display with 720p and a very huge display with 1080p, and you're sitting at the same distance from the two displays. You'll see a better (but smaller, of course) image on the 720p. |

Well if you're display does not support full HD then it will only have small difference between using 720p and 1080p content but if you are using a display that fully supports 1080p then by all means why would you go for 720p :)
For my screen which only support 1680x1050, i can tell the difference between watching 720p and 1080p content. 1080p is definitely better. Althought the encoding method of the video is also important. Some 720p contents look better than other 1080p simply because the video was encoded with better quality encoder(same with when you used a great decoder). I could be wrong though hehehe.

My 42" Samsung shows almost the same quality between 720p n 1080p. Sometime i can notice 1080p is slightly better.

My TV is capable of 1920 x 1080 progressive scan, so I can and do watch 1080p movies routinely through my PS3. I've done comparisons and the difference is either so slight that I don't care or just isn't there at all. My TV has been calibrated using an HDTV calibration disc on Blu-Ray, so I'm pretty sure it's about as good as it's going to get.
Thank you for all the replies folks. Much appreciated. |

i can only see the difference if i look closely... thing is i never really get to do that if the movie is good... the movies i've taken the effort to look closely enough are the ones that i felt were a waste of time watching...
