It depends on your HDTV screen size and your relative distance with it. Based on my experience, 40" and below show the same quality.

It is all about your panels quality and size. Plus your source for playback(pc power and connection) and your watching distance from panel.

I do not recommend to dl the movie in 720p

instead of 1080p if your tv is at least 50''.

I personally like 1080p because if you do math then 1080 is higher number than 720. Which will give you obviously better picture. But I have Apple TV now and it supports 720p only.So I dl 720p movies. I am planning to replace it with MAC Mini. Mac Mini supports full 1080p.

I download most of my movies in 720p. I have a 42" full HD LCD, but my reasoning is that I have only limited download bandwidth and storage space, so for movies I will watch a few times and enjoy I get 720p. If there is a movie that I LOVE, I will get it in 1080 so I can enjoy the higher quality.

Technically the 1080 picture is a lot better, and on the right TV you WILL notice the difference. I find that some 720 rips will show more MPEG artifacts compared to 1080, but you have to be very close to the screen to see them (and when do you ever really get that close to the screen...)

So yes 1080 is definitely better, but you make the call on wether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks for you personally.

This sounds like a rhetorical question which number is bigger Confused There's no way to distinct those resolution on most panels under 50" until the 4k x 2k resolution hits the street with 2160p as a future standard for hdtv. So, it's futile to force this debate until next video standard is made Wink

I have a 32" 1080p capable TV and yes 1080p looks sharper over 720p. I have to get most TV shows in 720p though unless in some sort of released boxset.
